About Tom |
Nelson graduated Valedictorian from Little Chute High School in 1994 and earned a scholarship to attend Carleton College in Northfield, MN. There he earned a B.A. in Political Science with honors and received the Second Century Student Prize for outstanding service and leadership in the community. Nelson also holds an M.P.A. from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School for Public and International Affairs. Following college, Nelson worked for then-Vice President Al Gore and the Committee for Economic Development (CED), a progressive, business-led public policy organization in Washington, DC. At CED, Nelson rallied national business and civic leaders in supporting the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform law, which was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bush in 2002. Senator Feingold singled out CED's efforts: "When the history of [campaign finance reform] is written, it will be CED's response that won the day." Nelson also worked with Members of Congress lobbying for Trade Adjustment Assistance, a federal program that expands unemployment insurance and provides job training and health care insurance for displaced workers in industry adversely affected by trade. Nelson is serving his second term. He sits on the following committees: Financial Institutions, Rural Development (Ranking member), Joint Legislative Council and Labor (Ranking member). |
